Burton Overy Christmas Tree Festival 2024

‘It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas’ in Burton Overy the weekend of 29 November to 1 December. Every year, (bar Covid), since the year 2000, the villagers of Burton Overy, (and we welcome others), have filled their church with beautifully decorated and lit Christmas Trees. Over the years there have been countless tree titles and ingenious ideas around the festival’s theme.

It has been noted that our excellent pharmacy had a new permanent sign installed on Monday 21 October. Romin and his wife Sahnieya Tayub have really turned around this business since they took over Lloyds Chemist. The car park spaces have also been clearly marked. Well done.

Softball Tournament

Illston Abey Cricket Club hosted a junior under 10s softball cricket tournament in September. Teams from Fleckney, Uppingham, Leicester Caribbeans Cricket Club, all supported the great event. With live music by the Leicester based band, Dirty Notes, and delicious food, it was a fantastic event with great weather and over 60 children enjoying the outdoors playing sports.

Our annual Christmas Tree Festival will be over the weekend of Saturday 7 December and Sunday 8 December, 10am- 4pm both days. Funds raised are for the continued upkeep of our beautiful church. Usual festive refreshments will be on sale as well as unique gifts.

County Councillor for Gartree

Readers of the Neighbourhood Link emails from our local police will have read about this but finally, after more than a year, of Community Speed Watch, lobbying and chasing, there is to be a 12-18 month period for police camera vans to be based on the A6 through the Kibworths to check the speeds of passing vehicles. Two locations have been identified on the A6 either side of the Wistow Road roundabout.

Where There's Life There's Hope?

It’s over 3½ years since I wrote the first article for the Chronicle about climate change and the challenge it presents, after a powerful presentation by David Ramsden MBE, speaker at the February U3A meeting. David told us about the huge sums of money spent by the main oil companies on anti-climate lobbying policies and the harm yet more oil production was causing. He urged us to take action, if only for the sake of the younger generations.
