Illston On The Hill WI

Illston On The Hill WI held their AGM in November. This proved to be a very lively meeting. All the various statements were read, digested and approved. The current officers and committee were re-elected. In order to try and encourage some new blood on to the committee we are introducing ‘friends in the WI’. One or two members will be invited to attend a couple of committee meetings during the year to familiarise themselves with the procedures of the WI and give them an insight into what the various tasks entail. We are hoping this will whet appetites and lead to some new and inspirational ideas. The AGM was followed by our annual supper which was lovely.

Kibworth Band

Over the last few weeks the band have been working hard on their chosen test piece for the LBBA contest on  Sunday 19 November. This is an own choice contest, which means that they have a free rein as to the piece of music they play. They have chosen Endeavour by a well known brass band conductor and composer, Philip Sparke. Held at Loughborough High School, the Band will be up against 11 other bands.

The Dolphin and Us

On holiday recently with family at Portwrinkle, on the south coast of Cornwall, I saw a dolphin washed up on the beach. On closer inspection, I noticed strong string wound several times round its back fin and a wooden label on the string, but the address washed off.

On Thursday, 12 October 2023 we were joined by Bill Haley BEM who delivered a fascinating presentation of ‘Life on Board Britannia’. Bill served in the Royal Navy for 27 years; 7½ of those spent on the Royal Yacht Brittania which Bill explained was an absolutely fantastic experience.
