After a tremendous season last year, we would like to congratulate one of our junior members, 10 year old Evan Fowler. Evan has qualified for the Champion of Champions World Junior Championship in Ireland this summer.

Kaye Angus lives and works on her canal boat as a Roving Trader, spending much of her time in our local area from October to April. She also keeps bees further down the Leicester line near Yelvertoft in Northants. Kaye has been a beekeeper for more than 15 years, making a wide range of natural health and home products using honey, wax, propolis and pollen.

On Saturday 30 December members of Foxton Environment Group planted a young sapling to commemorate the coronation of King Charles III.

Waxwings have featured in a previous Nature Note. From time to time a successful breeding season coincides with a poor crop of seeds and berries. The consequence is that large numbers of birds leave their forests in northern Europe and head south to seek food in non-traditional areas. If such an irruption occurs at the same time as a period of easterly winds, large numbers of birds reach the UK. These become known as ‘Waxwing Winters’ and following a gap of several years 2023-2024 is such a winter.

And though the mud could not disappear, the children did play at the opening of the newly refurbished play park at Robert Monk Village Hall on Middle Street Foxton on Saturday 30th December. Rising cleanly above the mud to be enjoyed was a new functional play tower and a bespoke inclusivity play tower for children in wheelchairs. Lots more now for children to experience along with the more traditional swings and slide.

In December, Foundation Stage went to Curve to watch ‘The Owl Who Came for Christmas’. Over the last few weeks, the children learned all about the story and wrote sentences about Rosie the Owl. The children were so excited to see the story come to life. It was a fantastic production and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. We were all so proud of the children’s excellent behaviour in their first school trip.
